Katarzyna Zowada

 Katarzyna Zowada

Episode 2

**TRIGGER WARNING**

Katarzyna “Kasia” Zowada

  • 23-year-old Katarzyna Zowada was studying religion at Jagiellonian University in 1998

  • Like any young adult, trying to figure themselves out, she had changed her studies a few times

  • Bouncing between psychology and history, before finally settling on religion

  • Katarzyna was known by her friends as shy, quiet and a bit introverted

  • She had been suffering from depression since the death of her father in 1996 and had received treatment for it

  • November 12th, 1998 Katarzyna had a scheduled checkup appointment at the Psychiatric Clinic and was meeting her mother there in Nowa Huta

  • But she never showed up

  • Katarzyna’s mother hadn't heard from her all day, and contacted the police

  • They asked her to hold out a bit longer as she was an adult

  • Two weeks before her disappearance, she had stopped attending classes at her school

  • Her mother had no clue she had given up on her schooling

  • She was still hanging out on campus, so she was never reported missing

  • She had started to change her appearance a bit

  • With a new haircut, losing a bit of weight, looking more happy

  • Some people thought she may have had a love interest

  • This was not confirmed just theorized by people

  • Nearly 2 months later, a boat known as the Elk pusher Tug was out on the Vistula waters

  • The crew felt the boat was caught on something, and decided to check the propellers out

  • Little did they know, they were about to have a gruesome discovery

  • Caught in the propeller was a weird leathery material

  • And soon found an ear attached to it

  • After contacting the police and having it sent for examination

  • It was proven to be human skin caught on the boat

  • And DNA kits had confirmed it was Katarzyna Zowada

  • And she had been in the water for about 2 weeks before she was found

  • In another area of the river, they had discovered Katarzyna’s right leg

  • Search teams, never found the rest of her body

  • Original theories were, her body had been mangled in the boat propellers

  • Which seems like a logical answer from how she was found

  • But after an examination on the body

  • They had discovered her skin was fillet off of her torso on purpose

  • Her head and other limbs had been cut off

  • And her skin was made into a body suit of sorts

  • That the police assumed the killer intended to wear

  • She had been beating very badly so badly before her death

  • And after they had been sliced under her armpits, neck and groin

  • Then had her skin filleted

  • They believe the killer had pulled the skin up by their hands

  • And all this happened while she was still conscious

  • Her cause of death after examination was blood loss, while being mutilated

  • Police were stumped at who could have done such a thing

  • In May of 1999, a similar case had unfolded in Krakow

  • A man had been discovered with an unattached and scalped head

  • Sounds familiar right?

  • Vladimir W, the son of the decapitated man had been the one to kill his father

  • The 26-year-old, lured his father into the basement of the home in Caucasus, Poland

  • After attempting to use a stun gun to end his father's life and failing

  • He resorted to stabbing him to death with a screwdriver

  • He then skinned his father's face

  • And hung his body upside down and began to decapitate his father with a shovel and surgical scalpel

  • He drained the blood into an old bucket in the basement

  • And after all this he took his father’s head into his room and started scalping it

  • When he was done, he had tossed his father’s head into the garden

  • And started sewing the face back together and used salt to dry the skin out and avoid decaying

  • Vladimir then wore his father’s face and met his grandfather at the park

  • His grandfather didn’t have the best eye sight, but his ears did not defy the weird tone his son was making

  • He knew something was fishy

  • Vladimir’s grandfather had decided to check the basement out and found his son’s headless body

  • After he headed to the neighbours house, he called 911 and informed them of the basement

  • Vladimir ran off with the clothes his father died in and hid them

  • He then remained sitting at a bus stop until the police arrived to arrest him

  • Vladimir was diagnosed with “borderline” Schizoid personality disorder and sentenced to 25 years

  • Due to the similarities of the cases, police had suspicion on Vladimir’s involvement with Katarzyna

  • After an investigation took place, there was no evidence to prove Vladimir was involved in the murder

  • They soon dismissed him as a suspect

  • Months and months go by and still nothing on who murdered Katarzyna

  • And after a year it became a cold case from no leads

  • Fast forward to 2012 when forensics and DNA testing has improved significantly

  • A group of officers that work on cold cases, re-opened Katarzyna’s case

  • After an autopsy and other forensic testing

  • They had concluded she has passed from blood loss

  • And found evidence on her that may help identify the murder scene

  • In 2014 an FBI psychological profiler labelled the murderer as “sadistic”

  • In 2016, investigators contacted professor Duarte Nuno Vieria who is a specialist in forensics and an expert in signs of torture on a human

  • Fun fact: Vieria is an expert for the United Nations

  • Vieria did confirm in his reviews of Katarzyna that she was tortured before her passing and by someone who was very skilled in fighting or martial arts

  • 52-year-old Robert Janczewski was arrested on October 4th 2017

  • Police found blood in his bathroom, and are being tested

  • Robert was a person of interest since the start, but no arrests were ever made

  • Robert was skilled in martial arts, a history of harassing women, he knew Katarzyna, and visited her grave.

  • Robert used to work with human corpses at a dissecting lab

  • And was even working as a Zoologist Institute, and would watch as others would prepare animals skins

  • He had been fired from there after a shift where all the bunnies were killed during his shift and had no reasoning as to why it happened.

  • One of Roberts friends had handed the police a letter from yours truly Robert Janczewski

  • Who had disclosed information about Katarzyna’s case

  • The letter has not been revealed yet to the public

  • Robert denies knowing Katarzyna, and is charged with aggravated murder

  • The police asked for more time to gather evidence and the courts extended his detention until September 6th 2018

  • Robert made complaints that he was being harassed by the guards, but this was just to buy more time for his trial

  • Investigators asked for a closed trial

  • Believe Robert to have been inspired by the movie ‘Silence of the Lambs’
